Make.com vs n8n vs Zapier: Which One Should You Actually Use?

After deploying 3,000+ workflows across all three platforms, here is our honest take on when each one makes sense.

We've built production automations on all three platforms. Make.com, n8n, and Zapier, plus a handful of others. When clients ask us which one they should use, the answer is never "it depends" with a shrug. It depends on specific things, and those things are worth understanding.

Here's our honest take after deploying 3,000+ workflows across these platforms.

The short answer

Make.com is what we use for most client work. It hits the sweet spot between power, visual clarity, and cost. n8n is the best option if you need self-hosting or have a developer-heavy team. Zapier is the easiest to start with, but it gets expensive fast and runs into walls on complex workflows.

Now the longer version.

Make.com: the production workhorse

Make.com (formerly Integromat) is where we build 80%+ of our client automations. Here's why.

Visual workflow builder that actually scales. Make's canvas lets you see your entire automation visually: branches, filters, iterators, aggregators, error handlers. When a scenario has 15+ modules and conditional logic, being able to see the flow matters. We've built scenarios with 40+ modules that are still readable because the visual layout makes the logic clear.

Pricing that makes sense at scale. Make charges by operations (steps executed), not by tasks or zaps. For high-volume workflows processing hundreds or thousands of records daily, Make is significantly cheaper than Zapier. A workflow that costs $100/month on Zapier might cost $20 on Make.

Built-in data transformation. Make has native functions for manipulating data: parsing JSON, formatting dates, aggregating arrays, mapping fields. You can transform data mid-workflow without needing external tools or code steps. This is critical for production automation where data rarely arrives in the format you need.

Error handling done right. Every module in Make can have its own error handler. You can set up retry logic, fallback paths, and break patterns per module. When an automation fails at step 12 of 20, you want to handle that failure specifically, not just get a "your zap failed" email.

Where Make falls short: The learning curve is steeper than Zapier. The interface is powerful but not immediately intuitive. And while Make's app library is large, there are occasionally niche integrations that Zapier has and Make doesn't (though this gap is shrinking).

n8n: the developer's choice

n8n is open-source and self-hostable. If that sentence excited you, n8n might be your platform. If it didn't, it probably isn't.

Self-hosting means full control. You can run n8n on your own infrastructure. Your data never touches a third-party cloud. For businesses with strict compliance requirements (healthcare, finance, legal) this matters. You control the uptime, the data residency, and the security.

Code-friendly. n8n lets you write JavaScript or Python at any point in a workflow. If your team has developers, this is powerful: you can handle complex logic that would require workarounds on no-code platforms. But if your team doesn't code, this flexibility becomes a liability.

Cost structure. Self-hosted n8n is free (you pay for your own infrastructure). n8n Cloud has pricing similar to Make. For startups and bootstrapped companies, self-hosted n8n is hard to beat on price.

Active community and rapid development. n8n ships features fast. The community builds custom nodes. If you need an integration that doesn't exist, you can build it.

Where n8n falls short: It requires more technical skill to set up and maintain. The visual builder is functional but less polished than Make's. And self-hosting means you're responsible for uptime, backups, and updates, which is fine if you have DevOps capacity and a problem if you don't.

Zapier: the gateway drug

Zapier is where most people start with automation. And for simple use cases, it works well.

Dead simple to set up. Pick a trigger, pick an action, done. Non-technical team members can create simple automations without training. The interface is clean and intuitive.

Largest app library. Zapier has 6,000+ integrations. If a SaaS tool exists, Zapier probably connects to it. For businesses using niche tools with limited API support, Zapier's library can be the deciding factor.

Good for simple, linear workflows. If your automation is "when X happens, do Y," Zapier handles it reliably and quickly.

Where Zapier falls short: Complexity and cost. Zapier's pricing is task-based, and tasks add up fast. A workflow that processes 1,000 records daily can blow through your plan in a week. Multi-step workflows with conditional logic are possible but clunky. Zapier wasn't designed for branching, looping, or complex data transformation. And error handling is basic compared to Make or n8n.

Our recommendations by use case

You're a small team automating simple workflows (fewer than 10 steps, low volume): Start with Zapier. It's the fastest to set up and easiest to maintain. You can always migrate later if you outgrow it.

You're building production automations that run your business: Use Make.com. The combination of visual workflow design, robust error handling, and cost-efficient pricing makes it the best platform for serious automation work. This is what we use for 80%+ of client projects.

You have developers and need self-hosting or maximum flexibility: Use n8n. The ability to self-host, write custom code, and build your own integrations is unmatched. If you have the technical resources to support it, n8n gives you the most control.

You're enterprise and need governance, SSO, and compliance features: Look at Make.com Enterprise or n8n Enterprise. Both offer team management, audit logs, and enterprise security features. Zapier has enterprise tiers too, but the per-task pricing becomes painful at enterprise volume.

The bigger picture

The platform matters less than the architecture. We've seen well-built Zapier automations outperform poorly built Make.com scenarios. The platform is a tool. What matters is whether the automation is designed for production: proper error handling, monitoring, documentation, and scalability.

If you're deciding between platforms, the question isn't "which is best?" It's "which is best for what I'm building, with the team I have, at the scale I need?" And if you're not sure, that's exactly the kind of thing we sort out in a discovery call.
