How we took a publishing company from product idea to production SaaS with AI
full SaaS product built from idea to production
The Situation
CMF Publishing is a US-based publishing company. Their founder spotted an opportunity to build a software product that would use AI to solve a real pain point in the publishing industry - document processing and content analysis that was still being done manually across the sector. He had years of domain expertise, understood the market inside and out, and had clients ready to use the product. What he did not have was a technical team. He had tried working with freelancers before for a simpler GoHighLevel automation project. That went well - which is how he found us. But this new project was a completely different scale: a full SaaS product with user authentication, a complex backend, AI agents, and a frontend that non-technical publishing professionals could actually use.
The Challenge
This was not an automation project. This was product engineering. We needed to design a database schema, build a Python API backend, create a Next.js frontend, integrate the OpenAI API for intelligent document processing, handle user authentication and permissions, and deploy the whole thing to production with monitoring and reliability. The AI components were especially tricky. OpenAI is impressive in demos, but making it reliable in production - where it processes real documents with real stakes and real users expecting consistent results - required careful prompt engineering, output validation, error handling, and fallback logic. A hallucination in a publishing context is not a novelty, it is a liability. We also needed to move fast. The market window was open and competitors were circling.
What We Built
Python Backend & API Architecture
- Full REST API handling business logic, data processing, user management, and external service integrations
- Database design optimized for the publishing workflow - documents, processing stages, AI outputs, and user permissions all modeled correctly from day one
- Integration with multiple third-party APIs beyond OpenAI - payment processing, file storage, and notification systems
Next.js Frontend
- Clean, intuitive interface designed for publishing professionals who are not technical - the complexity is in the backend, the frontend is simple
- Document upload, processing status tracking, AI output review, and team collaboration features
- Responsive design that works across desktop and tablet - because publishing teams work everywhere
AI-Powered Document Processing
- Custom AI agents built on the OpenAI API that analyze, classify, and extract structured data from publishing documents
- Prompt engineering tuned for accuracy and consistency - not just impressive first impressions, but reliable production results
- Output validation layer that catches AI errors before they reach the user - confidence scoring, format checking, and human review flagging for edge cases
Production Infrastructure
- Deployment pipeline with staging and production environments
- Monitoring, logging, and alerting so issues are caught before users notice them
- Designed for iteration - new features ship weekly without breaking existing functionality
Results
- Went from zero code to a live production SaaS product
- AI agents processing real documents for real users with production-grade reliability
- Multiple software products developed and launched under the same engagement
- New features shipping weekly - the product continues to evolve based on user feedback
- The founder went from having an idea and no technical team to having a product with paying users and a competitive edge
“I highly recommend Etherwise for their outstanding work. They are exceptionally professional, working at a fast pace without compromising quality. With their help, we've developed multiple software products from the ground up, bringing them successfully into production. We continue to add new features weekly, thanks to their dedication and expertise.”
